At this particular time in history, while America prepares for a new kind of war, how long will it be before new laws or war powers acts further restrict the usage of our fundamental constitutional freedoms? I do believe our constitutional rights are becoming increasingly restricted. I do believe our privacy is becoming more and more threatened. I am a patriot of the freedoms set forth by our founding fathers. I keep in mind a quote from one of my high school teachers while studying American revolutionary history: "The people deserve a government they are willing to endure" -Virginia Pusey |

| 09/30/01 00:00:00 | Featured at Hola Bella - The Electrum Project Jason Arron Wolf writes an excellent explanation of the physics behind both the photographic techniques and the subjects themselves in the series Art+Culture. A Brilliant Tribute to the Father of Electricity! Almost exactly 100 years after Tesla invented the famous Tesla coil in 1890, Eric Orr & Greg Leyh recreate the thunderous 100 million volt lightning bolts. Nikola Tesla was the man credited with the invention of AC alternating current. Otherwise known to us mortals as electricity. In addition to hundreds of other inventions Tesla is credited as inventing this Tesla coil - a standard part used in the manufacturing of every TV and radio. The Tesla coil executes a very ingenious process of generating volts by way of induction. The Tesla coil does this using a primary and secondary set of precisely wound wires know as “the coil”. By plugging a Tesla coil into a standard 110 volt household outlet one could extract literally millions of volts of electricity. The only question then becomes what to do with your own bolts of lightning. The first thing to notice in Karl Seifert’s photos is the sheer power of the coil. Here is something to help you imagine the power involved. Your home outlet has 110 volts, now, in electrical terms, you need approximately 50,000 volts to get a spark to jump 1 inch through the air. The bolts from this coil are jumping 30 feet through the air. And if you look closely Eric Orr is sitting in the middle of the giant sphere or “coil” at the top. How is this possible? Extremely high voltage static electricity flows over our body in what is known to science as the “skin effect”. That is, no dangerous current is entering his body rather it is just passing over him looking for a grounding source. The giant sphere is acting as a capacitor; it holds electrical charge in it until that charge is connected to a “grounding” source such as the earth. If no ground is provided, the sphere continuously becomes more charged to the point where an electrical “corona discharge” starts to glow blue-ish white around the sphere. Finally the voltage level becomes so high that the air surrounding the sphere is no longer strong enough to resist the electrical pressure and bolts of lightning surge off the sphere in an attempt to alleviate the gigantic build up of electricity. Man made lightning is the result! The techniques used in these photos to capture the electrical discharge is something not visible by human eyes. Because Karl Seifert used a time-lapse method, we are seeing the sheeting action that lightning takes in a frantic attempt to find a natural ground. Even the people there viewing this event live did not see what these photos have captured. We can see the small electrical streamers that are “ground seeking”, then exactly following the same path we can see enormous bolts proceeding - as if these streamers were intelligent scouts. The experience of seeing a Tesla coil like this live is a once in a life time chance. The high speed chaotic dance that the electrical tendrils perform leaves one with an almost eerie sense that you are seeing something that wasn’t meant to be seen, let alone time-lapsed photographed! Jason Andrew Wolf 2001 |

| 09/22/01 00:00:00 | “So Far …” SEPTEMBER 22 – NOVEMBER 17, 2001 Opening Reception: Saturday, September 22, 6.00 – 9.00pm Hola Bella Gallery introduces its inaugural exhibition of contemporary artwork by Bay area emerging artists. Included in this introductory show is the work by San Francisco based photographer, Karl Seifert in his first solo exhibition entitled "So Far…". Seifert presents several bodies of ongoing work varying in process, mood and subject matter. His photographs capture elements of chance whether with light or relationships with his subject. The fine line between control and randomness allows Seifert to continually explore new ideas. Seifert began documenting the subversive performance scene of San Francisco over the last seven years. The photographer often assuming the role of the observer now becomes the participant as Seifert must understand and anticipate the performers’ movements and actions. Tesla coils, fire dancers and radical installations, Seifert’s camera captures the radically expressive junction between nature, science and art. These photographs are more than just documents of an underground scene of art performers, they provide inspiration to the photographer himself. He becomes a witness to a particular place in time trying to replicate the mystery, capture the essence and relinquish control and act on intuition. As the work transitions from documentary to abstraction, Seifert continually battles between control and chance, making choices about composition and light. Often times the result is something he never expected. The nature series allows the viewer to witness the photographer’s sense of peace and awe of the simple beauty of nature. Seifert’s most recent body of work developed from a nude studio class while assisting Bill Carter. The recent photographs retain their wonderment for human movement and the pure abstraction of landscape. Seifert again collaborates with the model as he did with the performers, thus allowing the motion of the figure to govern the processed image. Karl Seifert has shown at Crucible Steel Gallery at CELLspace in San Francisco and will also be featured in Bang! Magazine in its first issue due in September. www.SFBang.com. Hola Bella Gallery is located in Hayes Valley at 534 Laguna @ Linden (415) 865-0463. Gallery hours are 12pm - 7pm Wednesday - Saturday or By Appointment. |
